Pityriasis rosea is a childhood skin problem that is extremely common. It is also known as “the Christmas tree rash”. It is not related to rosacea, which is a chronic, incurable problem with the skin that usually affects adults.
Pityriasis rosea is a papulosquamous eruption that favors the trunk and proximal extremities. It occurs most commonly in adolescents and young adults. 1 The rash typically presents with a solitary lesion, known as a “herald patch,” which is followed by a scaly erythematous eruption along the cleavage lines of the skin.
Causes. Pityriasis rosea is believed to be caused by a virus. It occurs most often in the fall and spring. Although pityriasis rosea may occur in more than one person in a household at a time, it is not thought to spread from one person to another. Females seem to be more affected than males.
