For example, if you join your host and play up until you have completed the eighth quest, you can return to your single-player save with all your EXP, loot, and weapons intact. This is only, however, if you are up to or past that point in your own single-player save.
Probably too late but,you can play the whole game alone or with other people but it saves only if someone joins you.(If you're further in the story than someone that joins you the game won't save that as completing the story but that only goes for the guy that joined.The same goes for you when you join while still being at the beginning of the game and the other guy at the end of it)
